Best Man edition by Colby Cuppernull Catcher James Michael Wishnoff Steve Davenport Literature Fiction eBooks

In a poetically stripped down prose, author Colby Cuppernull presents three linked short stories about the thin line dividing hope from fear and the ways in which the people and landscapes surrounding us shape us for better or for worse.
Best Man tells the story of Ethan Hager, who must decide whether his decision to stay in his small hometown in upstate New York to protect his troubled mother and younger brother is a noble sacrifice or simply a convenient excuse for not facing his own fears about what lies beyond the mountains. In the three stories comprising Best Man, we see Ethan as a child, a teenager, and an adult. In each story, a decision must be made that will forever alter Ethan’s life. Cuppernull elegantly explores Ethan’s descent into hardened bitterness and its impact on the people who love him most while compassionately presenting Ethan’s personal struggle and frustration.
The stories here are taken from Cuppernull’s currently unpublished novel-in-stories, Cold Comfort. The manuscript for Cold Comfort was one of four semi-finalists for the 2010 Mary McCarthy award, judged by celebrated novelist Francine Prose.

This collection of three connected short stories may be short in length, but they all contain great depth. A new writer, Colby Cuppernull has most assuredly earned my attention. These stories are very well written and provide new findings on each reading. But, as good as these stories are, I'm more excited about his next, unwritten work.Best Man contains three short stories: Happy Birthday, I Don't Speak French, and the titular story. All stories follow the life of main character Ethan. We meet him as a sad, neglected boy in Happy Birthday; a love-sick, torn teenager in I Don't Speak French; and as a confused, frustrated young man in Best Man. I won't further spoil the pleasures to be found in these stories, its best you read them for yourself.
The writing style is simple, stark, with a raw emotion bubblingly underneath. Ethan is often easy to sympathize with, especially in my favorite story, Happy Birthday. But, at times Ethan can be hard to root for. I mean this entirely as a compliment. He makes bad choices and reacts poorly...humanly. It is a fascinating collection of stories.
At times Cuppernull goes into "flowery description" mode. It only stands out because it feels forced and happens all at once then abruptly ends - almost as if he forced himself to do it and was just happy to be done with it. This weakness is in stark contrast to the biggest strength in Cuppernull's writting: his dialogue. The characters are all expertly drawn and speak with great naturalism. The themes and ideas this collection explores are interesting and provocative. Like family, duty, entitlement, and that drive we all share to live our own life, in our own way.
Ultimately, I fully recommend this short story collection. It is a great read, with real depth. Even moreso, I recommend you look for the next work by Colby Cuppernull. The promise and potential shown here is nothing short of exciting!

Awesome! It's a Must read! One of the first books that I actually read the whole thing. Get your copy now!
I downloaded this book because it was free and I could not put it down, hope Colby writes the novel so I can find out what happened before, in between and after. I am a fan.
Like the main character , Ethan, making choices is difficult, but not in reading this book, choice was easy! Recommend it,to all!
If this is a first effort then it is also a successful one. A highly entertaining read that shows a knack for character.
"Best Man" by Colby Cuppernull makes for an interesting short read and leaves you wanting more from the same author. Very descriptive writing and familiar colorful characters lend themselves to comfortable familiarity, but hanging questions cause you to continue to think about it well after the reading is done. There is definitely a sense that this new author has many more stories to share and many readers waiting for them to be shared.
I do not normally read short stories, but I very much enjoyed this book. It's a quick read and worth a look. I definitely would like to see the rest of the story published (the stories in Best Man are taken from Cuppernull’s currently unpublished novel Cold Comfort). I could see that there are concepts that need further exploring. What happens to Ethan!?
This is a short book--three collected stories--but it is definitely powerful. Each of the three connected stories packs a huge punch as we watch the main character, Ethan, struggle with decisions that offer no good option. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the stories is the way that you see the impact of these decisions on Ethan's character. He does become unlikable, but it says a lot about the writing that no matter how bitter he becomes, you still root for him and feel for him. Ethan is far from perfect, but Colby Cuppernull puts us in his shoes and makes us understand him and feel what he feels. As he struggles, you feel it. I highly recommend this book, and cannot wait to read the next work by this writer!
